Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Dr. Kartik's practice, appointments, and maternal fetal medicine.
What is Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM)?
Maternal Fetal Medicine is a sub-specialty of obstetrics focused on managing high-risk pregnancies. An MFM specialist has completed additional years of training beyond standard OBGYN qualifications, equipping them to handle complex medical conditions during pregnancy, interpret advanced imaging, and coordinate care for mothers and babies who need closer monitoring.
When should I see an MFM specialist instead of a regular OBGYN?
You may benefit from seeing an MFM specialist if you have a pre-existing medical condition (such as diabetes, hypertension, or autoimmune disease), a previous pregnancy complication, are carrying twins or multiples, have abnormal scan findings, are over 35, or have experienced recurrent miscarriages. Your regular OBGYN may also refer you for a specialist opinion.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Kartik?
No referral is needed. You can book directly by messaging Dr. Kartik's clinic on WhatsApp. Many patients come directly after doing their own research, while others are referred by their existing OBGYN or GP.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring any previous medical records, blood test results, ultrasound reports, and a list of current medications. If you have been seen by another OBGYN, bringing their notes or referral letter is helpful but not required.
Does Dr. Kartik deliver babies?
Yes. Dr. Kartik manages pregnancies from the first trimester through delivery. His primary practice is at Columbia Asia Hospital Bukit Jalil, where deliveries take place, and he will be present for your delivery whether it is a normal vaginal delivery or a caesarean section.
Can Dr. Kartik manage my pregnancy if I have a pre-existing condition?
Absolutely. Dr. Kartik's MFM training specifically prepares him to manage pregnancies complicated by conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune conditions, and more. He works closely with other specialists when needed to ensure comprehensive care.
What is a detailed anomaly scan?
A detailed anomaly scan (also called a level 2 ultrasound) is typically performed around 18–22 weeks of pregnancy. It systematically examines the baby's anatomy — brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs, and more — to check for structural abnormalities. Dr. Kartik performs these scans himself, providing expert interpretation.
